Gold Continues to Soar

 

Henry Aldridge and Son’s September 17th auction of antique and collectables had something for everyone with an impressive 911 lots going under the hammer. Company principal Alan Aldridge completed a marathon spell on the rostrom to a round of applause after selling on average 175 lots an hour over the course of the sale confirming his reputation as one the leading auctioneers in the South West.

 

The price of Gold and Silver is riding high at present and the sale contained a strong selection of material with estimates ranging from £50 upto £1000 per lot. Over 90% of the lots were sold with highlights such as a gold bracelet that held nine half sovereigns selling for £1150, a charm bracelet for £1000 and Sapphire ring £1250. The price of Sovereigns was as strong as ever with several examples selling for over £270 each. One of the most visually impressive objects in the auction was a large bronze figure of Venus signed Allegrain. Christophe Gabriel Allegrain was a French Sculptor who worked towards the end of the 18th century, this 19th century example sold to a telephone bidder for £1800. A fine selection of Gold Hunter and Half Hunters, Rolex, Omegas, carriage and mantle clocks attracted bids from across the country. A pleasant Vincent et Cie Mantel clock dating from later part of the 19th century sold for £700, a 1950’s Omega gentlemans wristwatch £650, Rolex Oysterdate £660 and a Girad-Perregaux ladies wristwatch making £640. The climax of the sale contained over 200 lots of selected antique furniture and paintings.

 

Standout pieces included a small Victorian Oil on Canvas of a young boy playing a recorder selling for £720 and a pair of watercolours by Elijah Walton made £700. Furniture and decorative items included a heavily carved oak dresser that made £780, Victorian Elbow Chair £550 and a pair of early 20th century Neo Classical candelabra made £625.

 

Henry Aldridge’s next sale will see the second of this years World famous Titanic and Ocean Liner auctions on October 29th. Over 370 lots of collectables and artifacts go under the hammer with estimates ranging from £50 to over £50000. Fully illustrated colour catalogues go on sale from October 7th at a cost of £15.

 

Entries are now invited for the prestigious November 12th auction of Selected Collectors Items and Antiques. Eye catching lots already consigned include a full size Dalek, vintage Americana such as rare Coca Cola and Pepsi vending machines, early Robots, unique plans for Sir Malcolm Campbell’s iconic Bluebird and a fascinating array of showbusiness and Elvis Presley material.
