PRESS RELEASE

JANUARY 13th  2007 Collectors Auction

The latest chapter in the history of Henry Aldridge and Son began at the January 13th auction of Collectors Items, Postcards, Coins and Antiques. This sale was the first of the auctioneer’s new  format of monthly auctions of Antiques and Collectors items scheduled for the second Saturday of every month. Henry Aldridge and Son were delighted in the attendance in the viewing days prior and on the day of sale with record numbers attending the Bath Road Auction Rooms. This upsurge in interest was without due to the new sale format and anticipation at the lots on offer.

The Syd Ricketts collection of Postcards caused a great deal of excitement among collectors due to the quality of the local cards available and of course its sheer volume, over 20000 cards in total. It is due to be spread over a further two Collectors sales in February and March.

The postcards sold for over £11000, a very satisfactory result for the both the vendor and the auctioneers. Postcards from most Wiltshire towns and villages were represented including some highly unusual examples from Devizes, Melksham, Imber, Chippenham and Calne. All cards sold for mid estimate or above.

The coin section of the sale was amply represented with over 40 lots of proof Gold and Silver coinage including Gold £100, £50, £10, Double Sovereigns, Gold £5’s and 50p’s and other proof sets on offer. Bidding was fierce between several clients and that particular section of the sale sold well at a top estimate £6000.

More traditional antiques were well represented with over 250 lots of Furniture, Ceramics and Works of Art. An oil on canvas by James Board sold for £900, an 18th century style oak table and chairs £1000 and a 19th century music box needing some tender loving care £500.

The next auction of Antiques and Collectors Items is to be held on Saturday 10th February. Part Two of the Syd Ricketts collection will be sold together with substantial collections of Beswick, Stamps, Coins, Toys and Dolls. Entries for this sale will be invited until January 31st.
