Auction Goes With A Bang

                                        Press Release

Henry Aldridge and Son, The Devizes Auctioneers held their latest auction of Antiques and Collectors Items on Saturday October 2nd. It was the first dedicated Collectors auction since the opening of the newly extended saleroom. Several hundred people came through the doors in the Bath Road saleroom to view and bid for the 550 lots on offer.

One of the more interesting pieces was a 1786 Brown Bess Musket that was found by the auctioneers during a routine house clearance under the stairs of a house in Chippenham. The owner of the property assumed it was a reproduction. But the auctioneers knew better and after careful research it was found that the musket was found to have belonged to a solider in the Sherwood Foresters Regt during the latter part of the 18th century and survived numerous campaigns including the Peninsula Wars and Caribbean Conflict. Several clients on the telephone competed with numerous bidders in the room and the winning phone buyer secured the lot for £4400 against an estimate of £3500-£4000.

Collectors items have become a strong niche for the Devizes auctioneers and they recorded a 100% selling success rate in a strong medal and military section of 80 lots with prices including £550 for a World War One Mons Star Group and a 19th Century Matchlock rifle in need of attention at £500.

An Andreas Reinsto Violin realised £2800 and a collection of postcards £1000, together with more established antiques such as a late Georgian mahogany wardrobe £1250, a watercolour by Fred Hines painted in 1895 £600, a 19th century bookcase in need of a great deal of restoration was seen as an ideal project by one bidder and sold for £800.
