Ephemera/Charlotte Brontė (1816-1855): A rare envelope written by Miss Brontė to her best friend and confidante Ellen Nussey, in brown ink bearing a Penny Red stamp and Leeds postmark August 1849. The envelope bears a black mourning band to the border. Ellen Nussey was the major influence for Elizabeth Gaskell's 1857 biography The Life of Charlotte Brontė, it is dated only weeks after the death of her sister Anne.

The letter is headed Saffron Walden Union to the Linton Union confirming payment to a pauper in the Parish during a period of sickness.
