267.    General Sir John Bryan Akehurst KCB CBE

After Sandhurst Sir John was commissioned into the Northamptonshire Regiment and became Commanding Officer of 2nd Battalion Royal Anglian Regiment by 1968. In his career Sir John served as Commander of the Dhofar Brigade of the Sultan of Oman's armed forces from 1974-76 battling a communist-inspired armed insurrection during the Dhofar Rebellion. He later spent two years as Deputy Military Secretary from 1976-78 before becoming General Officer Commanding 4th Armoured Division in 1979. In 1982 he was appointed Commandant of the Staff College, Camberly and then Commander of the UK Field Army two years later. Sir John retired in 1990 having been appointed Deputy Supreme Allied Commander Europe in 1987.

325.    Crime & Punishment/Ronald Kray: London County Council school leaving certificate for one of the most infamous British gangsters of all time, Ronnie Kray. 'This is to certify that Ronald Kray of 178 Vallance Road, E2 is exempt from the obligation to attend school within the administrative County of London', dated 17-12-48. Provenance: The certificate was given to the vendor's friends George and Sue Duyer by Charlie Kray, the eldest of the three Kray brothers. When Charlie was released on license in 1975 he stayed with George and his family.
NB. Ronald "Ronnie" Kray (24 October 1933 - 17 March 1995) and Reginald "Reggie" Kray (24 October 1933 - 1 October 2000), twin brothers, were British criminals, the foremost perpetrators of organised crime, in the East End of London during the 1950s and 1960s. With their gang, known as the Firm, the Krays were involved in armed robbery, murder, arson, protection rackets and assaults. In the 1960s, as West End nightclub owners, the Kray twins mixed with politicians and prominent entertainers such as Diana Dors, Frank Sinatra, and Judy Garland. They became celebrities themselves, were photographed by David Bailey and interviewed on television.
The Krays were arrested on 8th May 1968 and convicted in 1969, as a result of the efforts of detectives led by Detective Superintendent Leonard 'Nipper' Read. Each was sentenced to life imprisonment. Ronnie was committed to Broadmoor Hospital in 1979 and remained there until his death on 17th March 1995 from a heart attack; Reggie was released from prison on compassionate grounds in August 2000, eight and a half weeks before he died of bladder cancer. £500-600

Provenance - Dr. Samuel Lavington Hart Founder, Principal and President of the Anglo-Chinese College, Tientsin. Dr. Hart spent 27 years in China as a missionary and educator in Tientsin. In 1925 he met the last Emperor of China, Pu Yi who was temporarily resident in Tientsin at that time. Family lore states that the tile was given at that time to Dr. Hart and it originated in The Forbidden City, although there is no documentary evidence to support this, other than a contemporary letter confirming the meeting between Dr. Hart and the Emperor, although there is no mention of the tile. £1500-2000
