Eight former members of the Artists Rifles won the Victoria Cross in WWI. The archive chronicles in great detail his army career from training through to the horrors of the Western Front and culminating in the joy of Armistice day and its direct aftermath. As well as writing in great detail his obvious ability as an artist is reflected in the many illustrations and caricatures that embellish the letters. George even makes reference to a German postcard recovered from a trench which is included in the collection. The archive also contains George's army book together with notebooks containing sketches and officer study notes on warfare and strategy.
After the war George became well known as an artist of landscapes, humorous genres and illustrations, he was in charge of the world famous Slade School of Art in London and continued teaching artists figures such as the Director of the Festival of Britain, Sir Hugh Casson, Sir William Coldstream and Sir William Rotherstein as friends.
