301. R.M.S. TITANIC - INTERESTING POSTCARD RELATED TO JOHN JACOB ASTOR:
A colour postcard, postmarked 1907, depicting an image of a street scene in Algonac, Michigan. Pictured on the street are people and a covered wagon. Hanging above, stretching from one side of the street to the other, is a banner which reads "Col. J. J. Astor" followed by what appears to be the number "50". It would seem that the town was welcoming Col. Astor for some reason. Algonac, Michigan remains a thriving town today and this card is certainly deserving of more research. At first glance, Astor does not appear to have had any significant connection to Algonac.
Col. John Jacob (J.J.) Astor was considered to be the richest man on board Titanic and one of the richest men in America at the time. He married Madeleine Talmage Force when she was 18 years old. She was about 5 months pregnant with Astor's son at the time of the disaster. Madeleine survived, he did not.
302. R.M.S. TITANIC - REVEREND JOHN HARPER MEMORIAL PHOTOGRAPH/POSTCARD:
This photograph features a beautiful tablet erected to the memory of Second Class passenger Reverend John Harper, 39 years old, in the Walworth Road Baptist Church in London. The photograph was printed as a postcard and the message on the tablet speaks of Harper and the circumstances which led to his travel to America on Titanic.
There is no mention of this memorial in the literature we have consulted including the definitive "Titanic Memorials Worldwide" by renowned Titanic Historian Brian Ticehurst.
Accordingly, this may be the only record and image of the memorial to Reverend Harper extant. Unfortunately, the church in which it was displayed no longer stands.
The postcard was postally used and is dated October 18th 1912. The hand written message discusses Harper and describes where the memorial was located in the church. This may be a unique opportunity to own what may be the only existing record of the memorial to one of Titanic's lesser-known heroes. 5.1/2ins. x 3.1/2ins.
303. R.M.S. TITANIC - ORIGINAL PHOTOGRAPH OF ASTOR STEAM YACHT NOMA EN ROUTE TO MEET CARPATHIA:
The steam yacht Noma was built in 1902 by the Burlee Dry Dock Company in New York. It was later acquired by John Jacob Astor's son Vincent. It was reported in the "New York Times" on 2nd September 1911, that J. J. Astor and his bride-to-be, Madeleine Force, and her family, had sailed on the Noma up the Hudson River in New York towards the Astor family home in preparation of their forthcoming marriage.
This lot consists of a photograph, 5ins. x 7ins. with white border, of the Noma at sea on April 18th 1912. The yacht was carrying William V. Astor, son of J. J. Astor, whose intention was to meet the Carpathia upon her arrival in Ambrose Channel so that he could take off his step-mother (Madeleine Astor) whom he had known to be onboard.
There does not appear to be a record of the transfer having actually occurred. Given the need for a passenger to be cleared through immigration and the unlikeliness of the Carpathia stopping to disembark a passenger in mid-channel, Mr. Astor's plan probably did not come to fruition.
Photographer's stamp on verso. There is a slight discolouration in the sky area and some writing in the negative at the top. Otherwise, this is a crystal clear image of the yacht at sea en route to a little known intended rendezvous.
304. R.M.S. TITANIC: An unique original first generation photograph of Titanic leaving Southampton on April 10th 1912. 2.1/2ins. x 2ins.

312. R.M.S. TITANIC/MARCONI: Stunning first generation portrait photograph of Jack Binns in Marconi address uniform. Jack Binns was the first man to send a wireless distress call CQD when lone Radio Operator onboard the S.S. Republic on 23rd January 1909. His actions saved the lives of the passengers and crew of the stricken ship and were to play an important part in the Titanic story just over three years later.
Due to Binns status Marconi went to offer him the position of Radio Operator on the Titanic, however by now Jack was engaged and turned down the job. Shortly after the disaster The Marconi Wireless Company of America's Chief Engineer wrote to the executive of the New York American Newspaper. The paper had commissioned a vessel, the tug Mary F. A. Scully, to gather news of the disaster from Carpathia which was heading towards New York. The tug had Marconi Co. operators onboard. This letter advised the paper of the problem with the Carpathia's operators (overworked) and, given that the tug was in the vicinity of Carpathia with two of the company's best wireless operators onboard asked, in the interest of humanity, that the paper agree to transfer one of them to Carpathia.
As it turned out, the operator to be transferred was Jack Binns, renowned Marconi Radio Operator who, in 1909, remained at his post for about 36 hours to summon help during the sinking of the Republic. He was now working in journalism with Hearst's newspapers (but still a Marconi Co. employee).
Unfortunately, when the two vessels met, Carpathia failed to stop to take Binns onboard. The Scully pursued Carpathia but to no avail. Now, the NY American was not only reporting the news but was also making it. At the Senate Inquiry, Mr Marconi testified as to the attempt to relieve Carpathia's operators with Scully's. Binns wrote a hand written Marconigram to NY American stating that Carpathia failed to stop and that they are passing on messages for Carpathia.
An extremely rare photograph of one of the most important men in the story of Marconi Wireless Communications, on that tragic night of April 14th 1912. 4ins. x 6.1/2ins.
313. R.M.S. TITANIC: Continuous Certificate of Discharge to First Class Steward Albert Charles Thomas. The book includes the entry for Titanic intended New York 15th April 1912. A second Certificate of Discharge for Mr Thomas shows entries for Olympic in August and September 1914 up to his last voyage in February 1928. Onboard the Berengaria as an assistant Doctors Steward. The lot is sold complete with a photo of Mr Thomas in 1928.
314. R.M.S. TITANIC - SECOND OFFICER DAVID BLAIR: Four keys on a double ring and brass tag with punched lettering "Binocular Box". One key belonged to the binocular box on the bridge of R.M.S. Titanic, it is unknown where the other three were used. They and the crow's nest key, sold by Henry Aldridge September 2007, were inadvertently removed by Officer Blair when he left the Titanic and was replaced by Henry Wilde. These keys were originally obtained by leading Titanic & Maritime Historian, lecturer and authority Peter Boyd-Smith in 1977 and later formed a part of Southampton Maritime Museums, Titanic Exhibition until November 2009 when the then owner decided to consign them to auction at Henry Aldridge & Son.
"It is interesting to note that the binoculars owned by Titanic's original Second Officer David Blair, were one of the few instruments known to have Titanic's name engraved on them. Testimony given to the Board of Trade hearings documents Blair's binoculars as being inscribed 'Theatre, Marine and Field' and 'Second Officer, S.S. Titanic'. Theatre, marine and field' indicated a setting on the apparatus to adjust the field of view. A pair of binoculars was issued to each officer, and when the officer was on duty were stowed in a teak box located on the bulwark of the Bridge wings".

315. R.M.S. OLYMPIC: An extremely rare launch menu for Olympic dated 20th October 1910 held at the Grand Central Hotel, Belfast. This is one of only a handful of these menus known and is identical to those used for Titanic's launch.
316. R.M.S. TITANIC: Unique first generation image in sepia of R.M.S. Titanic Third Class passenger Malcolm Joackim Johnson who died aged 33 in the disaster. In a contemporary mount and Johnson's personal details on reverse. 4ins.

Harper's brother and dated 3rd July 1912. " To Pastor Hildrick, with Christian love from his friend and brother in Christ George Harper". Also contained in the lot are press cuttings from various publications including "The Christian" relating to the loss of Rev. Harper and also a newspaper account of Rev. Harper's last hours.
318. R.M.S. TITANIC - STUNNING ORIGINAL FULL-LENGTH PORTRAIT PHOTOGRAPH OF TITANIC SURVIVOR LADY DUFF-GORDON:
An original silver gelatin photograph, circa 1910, of First Class Titanic survivor and Edwardian couturiere, Lady Duff-Gordon (Lucile), standing, in a glamorous head-to-toe pose taken soon after the opening of the New York branch of her renowned Lucile Ltd. Fashion Salon. 5.1/4ins x 7ins.
Lady Duff-Gordon, her husband, Sir Cosmo and her maid/secretary Miss Francatelli boarded the Titanic at Cherbourg. By then, Lucile was already an established Fashion Designer. The Duff-Gordon's and Miss Francatelli were rescued in Lifeboat 1 which carried only 12 people despite having a capacity for 40. Their rescue was not without controversy. Cosmo Duff-Gordon had promised the crew members of their lifeboat £5 each to cover the cost of their lost possessions. The gesture was later viewed as an incentive for the crew not to return to pick up additional survivors. The Duff-Gordons denied this but their lifeboat was nevertheless dubbed "The Money Boat." Lady Duff-Gordon passed away in London in April 1935.
This crystal clear photograph captures the essence of a pre-Titanic vivacious Lucile as she was approaching the zenith of her career. There is a small piece of photo paper missing from each lower corner, not affecting the image.
319. ORIGINAL PHOTOGRAPH OF R.M.S. CARPATHIA:
An original vintage photograph of the ship that rescued Titanic's survivors in a full length starboard view, showing the ship coming towards you. Carpathia's name is clearly visible on the bow. This photo was used in connection with contemporary news reports of Carpathia's disaster. 6.1/2ins x 8.1/2ins
The Carpathia was built by Swan Hunter & Wigham Richardson at their Newcastle Upon Tyne, England ship yard. She was launched on 6th August 1902 and after an eventful career was sunk on 17th July 1918 by a German U-boat.
320. R.M.S. TITANIC - ORIGINAL PHOTOGRAPH OF TITANIC LIFEBOAT APPROACHING CARPATHIA:
An original vintage double weight Underwood & Underwood (New York) close-up photograph of a collapsible lifeboat full of passengers wearing life jackets approaching Carpathia. Three of the occupants appear to be actively rowing. Some portions of the image were highlighted by hand for publication. The reverse contains publication markings with various dates of publication, a snipe and three newspapers images or captions of this very photograph in print. 6ins. x 8ins.
321. R.M.S. TITANIC - ORIGINAL PHOTOGRAPH OF REVEREND JOHN HARPER'S ENTIRE TITANIC PARTY:
Harper was born in Glasgow in 1872, devoting himself to bible study at an early age.
In 1897 he helped to establish a church in a suburb of Glasgow with 25 members, which had grown to almost 500 members by September 1910 when he accepted a position as Pastor at the Walworth Road Baptist Church in London. By this time, his wife had passed away leaving him to care for their daughter, Annie Jessie ("Nana"), with the help of his niece, Miss Jessie W. Leitch.
Harper was invited to host a series of revival meetings at the Moody Church in Chicago in the Spring of 1912. Upon accepting the temporary post, passage to America was arranged for Harper, Nana and Ms. Leitch aboard the Lusitania; however, on the morning of 2nd April 1912 Harper received word that the coal strike would keep the Lucy in dock and that the Cunarder Carmania would take her place. Not keen on sailing on a slower ship, he booked Second Class passage for his party on Titanic instead.
Harper spent much of the voyage devoted to prayer and meditation. Ms. Leitch recalled that before they retired on the evening of 14th April, Harper read a passage from the bible, gazed into the twilight lit red sky and remarked that it would be beautiful in the morning.
Just after midnight, Harper advised Nana and Ms. Leitch that the ship had hit an iceberg and had them put on their life jackets. He wrapped Nana in a blanket and placed her in the care of Ms. Leitch whereupon they both boarded Lifeboat 11. That was the last either of them saw of Harper. According to witnesses, Harper spent his final moments much the same as he spent the preceding days of the voyage, devoted to prayer and consoling others.
In New York, the Carpathia was met by two representatives of the Moody Church who travelled from Chicago. They attempted to encourage Nana and Ms. Leitch to return with them to Chicago but Ms. Leitch felt it best for them to return home, so on 25th April 1912 they departed for England on the Celtic.
Nana married Reverend Pont. She passed away in 1986 at the age of 80. Ms. Leitch passed away some years earlier.
This lot consists of a stunning original portrait photograph of Harper, Nana (gazing eerily into the camera), Miss Leitch and Miss Pratt, a blind congregant of Harper's church who is holding an autoharp. The photograph was made into a postcard and contains a handwritten message from one of Harper's congregants. Taken outdoors, the image is somewhat incongruous as Harper is wearing a top coat while the others are in lighter attire. 3.1/2ins. x 5.1/2ins.
This photograph is an outstandingly obscure piece of Titanic history featuring a member of the clergy who did not survive, and two of his family members who did, as well as a family friend. The image is of exceptional quality in near mint condition.
322. TITANIC SURVIVOR MRS. WILLIAM E. CARTER:
Lucile Carter embarked on Titanic in Southampton as a First Class passenger with her husband, William E. Carter, their two children, three servants and two dogs. Listed on Titanic's cargo manifest is the Carters' Renault automobile. According to the manifest, the car was in a crate. Thus, it probably was not fully assembled despite the scene in the James Cameron film in which Jack and Rose are shown in the back seat of a fully assembled vehicle.
The Carters, who were members of Philadelphia's "Main Line" society, were guests at the dinner party for Captain Smith on 14th April 1912 which was hosted by Mr. and Mrs. George Widener. In Chapter VII of his book, "The Sinking of The Titanic: Eyewitness Accounts" (1912), Jay Henry Mowbray revealed that the Carters had homes in Newport (Rhode Island), Bryn Mawr (Pennsylvania) and at 2116 Walnut Street, Philadelphia.
Mr. Carter was saved in collapsible boat C while Mrs. Carter and the children were saved in Lifeboat 4 along with her maid. Sadly, Mr. Carter's manservant and chauffeur, as well as the Carters' two dogs, were lost in the disaster.
R.M.S. TITANIC/CARPATHIA - ORIGINAL MARCONIGRAM FROM MRS. WILLIAM E. CARTER REQUESTING CLOTHING FOR HER FAMILY:
While on board the rescue ship Carpathia, Mrs. Carter submitted this handwritten message on a Western Union telegraph form, pasted onto a Marconi International Marine Communication Company, Ltd. form. Undated but likely 18th April 1912, addressed to 2116 Walnut Street, Philadelphia. Apparently pencilled in Carter's own hand, the message states, in full: "Brin(g)(redacted) Meet us with (redacted) hats, coats, for all." Stamped on the form in large block purple ink letters is "NOT TRANSMITTED", as the wireless operators did not have time to send all outgoing messages before arriving in New York. Written in another hand is "No Charge", reflecting that Mrs. Carter was not charged for the unsent message. Since the message was not transmitted there would be no recipient's copy. Thus, this message is truly unique.
Measures 5.1/2ins. x 9ins. Information from the Marconi Company is printed on the reverse.
Provenance: "Titanic Signals of Disaster" by John Booth & Sean Coughlan (White Star Publications 1993), p. 138.
323. RARE PORTRAIT PHOTOGRAPH OF MRS. WILLIAM E. CARTER:
An original beautiful period portrait photograph of Mrs. Carter in a pensive half-length pose which even by today's standards might be considered somewhat risqué. There are some notes and a purple photographer's stamp: "P.S. Rogers, Photographs, 34 West 15th Street, New York" on verso. 6.1/4ins. x 8.1/2ins.
Original photographs of Mrs. Carter are exceedingly rare.
324. R.M.S. TITANIC - ORIGINAL MARCONIGRAM FROM FIRST CLASS TITANIC PASSENGER FREDERIC KIMBER SEWARD:
Frederic Kimber Seward was a First Class passenger who boarded Titanic in Southampton, returning to America where he lived and worked as an Attorney. On the rescue ship Carpathia, he was instrumental in organizing a committee of survivors, including Molly Brown, to honour the Officers and Crew of Carpathia with commemorative medals.
This lot consists of an original handwritten message dated 18th April 1912 on a Marconi International Marine Communication Company, Ltd. form. It is addressed to "Migniard…" and reads "Seward Safe", indicating that Seward was amongst the rescued. The message was transmitted to MSC (Marconi's Seagate land station in New York) at 7:58am. and was personally initialled by Harold Cottam, Carpathia's Radio Operator. Carpathia is stamped twice in purple ink; handwritten calculations in red ink made later at the Marconi accounting office confirm the charges incurred by Seward. Information from the Marconi Company is printed on the reverse. 5.1/2ins. x 9ins.
Provenance: "Titanic Signals of Disaster" by John Booth & Sean Coughlan (White Star Publications 1993), p. 108.
325. R.M.S. TITANIC - ORIGINAL PHOTOGRAPH OF TITANIC SURVIVOR PETER DENNIS DALY, OCCUPIED STATEROOM E-17:
Scarce, vintage, original albumen carte de visite studio photograph, of First Class Titanic survivor Peter Dennis Daly pictured with his twin brother, Paul Albert Daly. It is likely that Peter is the one on the left. Studio imprint on front and verso, "Vandyke, Liverpool," photographed by Aaron Vandyke. 2.1/2ins. x 4ins.
Daly was born in in Liscard, England in 1860 to a father of Irish descent and to a mother of French descent. As an adult he and his family resided in Lima, Peru where he represented a London business firm, often travelling to London for business. He was returning from a business trip to Lima on Titanic via New York, occupying stateroom E-17. Henry Aldridge & Son previously sold a superlative relic from Titanic being First Class Bedroom Steward Edmund Stone's Master Stateroom key for E-deck Cabins E-1 to E-42, which included Daly's cabin E-17 as Stone would have been his Steward.
Daly was rescued, apparently in a collapsible lifeboat, but details surrounding his rescue are somewhat sketchy. This is an opportunity to acquire an original photograph of one of Titanic's more elusive passengers.
326. R.M. S. TITANIC - TITANIC SURVIVOR EDITH RUSSELL:
Mrs Russell, 33, boarded the Titanic as a First Class passenger at Cherbourg and occupied cabin A-11. She had been in Paris reporting on French fashions when she decided to return to the United States on Titanic. Although somewhat of a celebrity in her own right as a fashion writer and war correspondent, Russell's real claim to fame began after she met Titanic historian Walter Lord at the New York premier of the 1953 Titanic film. She and Lord became good friends and Lord included her Titanic story in his legendary book 'A Night To Remember' (Henry Holt, 1955). Afterwards, Russell served as the technical advisor to the 1958 film version of 'A Night To Remember' (Rank Organisation, 1958) in which her musical pig, Maxixe, named after the ragtime song it played, was featured in the film. Russell's mother had given her the pig as a good luck mascot and she brought it with her on Titanic, having a steward fetch it from her cabin before getting into a lifeboat. Russell died in London in 1975. She bequeathed the toy pig to Lord who then bequeathed it to the Maritime Museum at Greenwich, where it is now on display. According to Lord, the song still played when he wound the pig's tail.
ORIGINAL DRAFT LETTER FROM EDITH RUSSELL
This lot consists of a five page typed draft letter from Russell to Mr. Smith of the "American Silk Journal" in New York headed "Paris, 15th May 1917," war date. The letter is written in the first person and is apparently copy for an article on silk fashions with handwritten corrections throughout, presumably in Russell's hand.
The letter begins by lamenting on how navy blue colours fade from silk and other fabrics, including the very clothing that Russell was wearing when writing. Although she ends with a promise to write about winter fashions next time, "This is last letter" is boldly handwritten on the first page.
"American Silk Journal" was published until 1932. Copies of its issues are held at the Smithsonian Institution. The letter is unsigned, as Russell rarely signed her written material, but contains the typed initials ELR (Edith L. Russell).
327. R.M.S. TITANIC - ORIGINAL WIRE PHOTO OF EDITH RUSSELL WITH HER TOY PIG:
This lot consists of an original captioned wire photograph of Russell and her musical toy pig, Maxixe, which she had on Titanic; taken in 1972 on occasion of the 60th anniversary of Titanic's sinking. The pig is covered in mostly white faux hair and is now part of the Walter Lord collection at the National Maritime Museum at Greenwich, England where it is on display. An unusual opportunity to acquire a photo of Russell and Maxixe together. 8ins. x 10ins.
328. R.M.S. TITANIC - ORIGINAL PHOTOGRAPH OF TITANIC'S AND OLYMPIC'S ARROL GANTRY AT THE HARLAND & WOLFF SHIPYARD:
An original, possibly unique, photograph of the immense double Arrol Gantry at the Harland & Wolff Shipyard, Belfast, in which Titanic and Olympic would soon be built. The double gantry, consisting of two massive slipways, was constructed to accommodate the building of the two ships, and their sister, Britannic, utilizing a space which previously accommodated three slipways. The gantry was built by Sir William Arrol and Company Ltd. of Glasgow.
The image was taken at an angle providing a most uncommon perspective of the gantry, which appears to extend endlessly. Note the little booth in the foreground from which the progress of work could be observed. We have never seen another view of the gantry quite like this one.
Photographer's stamp, and notes on verso. Small piece missing from lower right corner not affecting image. 8ins. x 10ins.
329. R.M.S. TITANIC - ORIGINAL PHOTOGRAPH OF TITANIC UNDER CONSTRUCTION AT THE HARLAND & WOLFF SHIPYARD:
An original photograph of Titanic under construction in the Arrol Gantry at the Harland & Wolff Shipyard, Belfast. The fact that Titanic's sister ship, Olympic, had already been launched and was no longer in the adjacent slipway allowed the photographer to capture Titanic's bow at a very close and unique angle. Indeed, the image is close enough to discern individual hull plates. The ship's name was added to the image as the lettering for Titanic's name would not be cut into the bow and painted until later.
This extremely close photograph provides what may be unprecedented detail of the ship and its surroundings during building. The image is exceedingly rare in original form. Notes, stamps and negative No. on verso. 5ins. x 7ins.
330. R.M.S. TITANIC - ORIGINAL PHOTOGRAPH OF TITANIC HULL FOLLOWING LAUNCH:
An original photograph of Titanic following her launch in Belfast with "Titanic" handwritten in the negative. There is a small archival repair to the lower right corner and a small piece missing from the upper left corner, neither of which affect the image. Some markings on verso. 5ins. x 6.1/2ins.
331. R.M.S. TITANIC - OUTSTANDING ORIGINAL 1912 PHOTOGRAPH OF TITANIC'S ONLY FEMALE SURVIVOR RESCUED FROM THE WATER, INSCRIBED TO A CARPATHIA PASSENGER:
A superlative Titanic-related artifact consisting of an original photograph of Third Class survivor Rhoda (Rosa) Abbott, who was travelling to America with her sons, Rossmore and Eugene. The full-length image pictures Abbott standing with her left arm resting on the back of a wooden chair. At the lower right corner she has signed in ink, "Yours truly Rosa Abbott Dec 2nd 1912." On the reverse, she has inscribed in ink, "To dear Mrs. Lessman, in remembrance of the S.S. Titanic. April 15th 1912 Rosa Abbott, Survivor." Mrs. George Lessman was a Second Class Carpathia passenger from Chicago when Abbott was brought on board the rescue ship.
Abbott, who had separated from her husband in America, moved to England with her children in August 1911 to be with her mother but soon decided they would return to America. On 10th April 1912 Abbott and her two boys embarked on Titanic from Southampton as steerage passengers ultimately bound for Providence, Rhode Island. When Titanic was foundering, Abbott and her boys were swept off the deck into the water and Abbott eventually managed to be rescued in Collapsible Lifeboat 'A'. Both her sons were lost. Abbott is the only female passenger to have been rescued from the water.
The conditions on collapsible 'A' were less than ideal. The boat sat low in the water and several passengers died from hypothermia. Those who survived were rescued, yet again, by Fifth Officer Lowe who transferred them to collapsible 'D'. Lowe set collapsible 'A' adrift with three bodies, which was recovered by the Oceanic on 13th May 1912.
Abbott required medical attention on board Carpathia due to the effects the cold water had on her legs. She was taken to St. Vincent's Hospital upon arrival in New York. Abbott returned to England with her second husband in 1928, and died there from heart failure in 1946.
The only other example of a photograph of a Titanic survivor inscribed to a Carpathia passenger of which we are aware was part of the Frank Blackmarr Collection, and is currently in an American Museum. This may be the only opportunity to ever acquire another. 3.1/2ins. x 5.1/2ins.
332. R.M.S. TITANIC/OLYMPIC - ORIGINAL WHITE STAR LINE OLYMPIC & TITANIC BROCHURE OF ACCOMMODATIONS AND ARRANGEMENTS:
An original White Star Line brochure, 72 pages a striking red cover with "Olympic and Titanic 45,000 Tons Each" in bold block white, and black lettering and an image of the vessel underway, printed by Liverpool Printing and Stationery Co., Ltd. Published May 1911, likely to coincide with Titanic's launch. Proudly displayed below the ships' names on the title page is, "Designed, Built and Engineered by Harland & Wolff, Ltd., Belfast."
The brochure begins with the achievements the two sisters represent and how they were built side by side at Harland & Wolff. The vessels are then described, beginning with the hull, then the decorations and, finally, the machinery. The information contained in these sections is more than informative, from technical data on the watertight doors to the mechanics of the engines and just about everything in between.
Accommodations for each class are described in detail. Descriptions of various amenities of the ship are also included. For example, on page 39 a portion of the Grand Staircase is described as follows: "Above all a great dome of iron and glass throws a flood of light down the stairway, and on the landing beneath a great carved panel gives its note of richness to the otherwise plain and massive construction of the wall." The symbolism of the staircase's renowned clock is also discussed.
The text is complemented by 49 illustrations and photographs, some of which may not easily be found elsewhere. The Grand Staircase (referred to as the Main Staircase), Dining areas, Turkish Bath, Smoking Room, Pool (referred to as the Swimming Bath), each class of cabin, stages of building and machinery are all beautifully depicted throughout the book.
Some of the more interesting passages in the brochure provide that everything on board had been "brilliantly" conceived and that Olympic and Titanic "stand for the pre-eminence of the Anglo-Saxon race on the Ocean." Olympic and Titanic are even compared to Noah's Ark:
"A ship-if the Ark can be so designated-
Played an important part in the early stage
of man's development. To-day ships are amongst
the greatest civilizing agencies of the age, and
the White Star Liners Olympic and Titanic-
eloquent testimonies to the progress of mankind,
as shown in the conquest of mind over matter-
will rank high in the achievements of the 20th century".
The brochure's 72 pages are packed with a plethora of unique and informative details about Olympic and Titanic from the line which owned them. There is not much more we can say about the importance of this lot than it is one of the very few known to have survived. 5.1/2ins. x 8.1/2ins.
333. R.M.S TITANIC - THE COMPOSER PENS A PORTION OF TITANIC'S LAST SONG?:
One of the most debated controversies in Titanic lore surrounds the song played as the ship went down. Several survivors reported that it was "Nearer My God to Thee". Even among those who accept this, there is disagreement over whether the band played the British or the American version of the hymn.
Soon following his arrival in New York, Harold Bride, Titanic's surviving Wireless Operator, told the "New York Times" that the band's last song was Autumn. Many believe he was actually referring to Songe d'Automne (Autumn's Dream), since that song appeared as a number in the White Star Line music booklet. Many historians accept Bride's version as credible since he was trained to pay attention to detail, he was known to have been onboard until the last moments and he reported what he heard as soon as he arrived in New York while it was still fresh in his mind. However, since none of the band members survived, the identity of the last song will always be a topic of controversy.
This lot consists of an autographed musical quotation signed on a blue slip of paper, 2ins. x 3.3/4ins., with 4 handwritten measures of music entitled Songe d'Automne, dated 24/1/50 entirely in the hand of, and signed by, the composer, Archibald Joyce. On the reverse is a hand drawn stringed instrument signed N. Medvedeff and dated 8th Feb. 1951 (Nicholas Medvedeff was a Russian conductor).
Archibald Joyce was born 25th May 1873 and died 22th March 1963. He was known as the English Waltz King, with Songe d'Automne being one of his more popular waltzes.
334. R.M.S. TITANIC - "A NIGHT TO REMEMBER" ONE SHEET FILM POSTER:
This is an original one sheet film poster for "A Night to Remember" (Rank Organisation 1958) based on the best selling novel by Walter Lord. Produced by William MacQuitty and starring Kenneth More, the film won the Samuel Goldwyn International Award in 1959.
The poster itself measures 27ins. x 41ins. and is linen backed and framed to Museum standards. The poster was intended for display at theatres showing the film. A studio notation at the bottom directs that the poster be returned upon the completion of use. This is a commanding piece with beautiful artwork and vibrant colours in excellent condition.
335. R.M.S. TITANIC: Onboard postcard postmarked Queenstown 11th April 1912. The card, of the Olympic and Titanic, would have been sold onboard and the sender would have sent it as a last reminder to friends still ashore.
Mr William John Matthews, 30, who was born in the village of Penwithick Stents to the north of St Austell, Cornwall in 1890, the son of Joseph Matthews (china clay labourer) and Ellen Matthews. He was the younger brother of Susan, Samuel and Emma Jane. He, like his father, worked as a China labourer (probably at St Mewan, to the west of St Austell). He boarded Titanic at Southampton as a Second Class passenger, ticket number 28228. £13. He was on his way joining his fiancé in La Salle, Illinois. It is possible that he travelled with Richard Slemen of Landrake, Cornwall.
William John Matthews was lost in the disaster, his body, if recovered, was never identified. (Encyclopaedia Titanica passenger biography).
The message reads:
Dear Bill
Just a line to you old boy
Just to let you know I am alright and well and I hope you are the same
You can remember me to all
Well good bye from Jack
The card is sent to W H Stone, Tregonissey, St Austell, Cornwall, England.
Using a half penny stamp, with a partial strike of the Queenstown 3.45pm postmark of 11th April 1912 found on all of the mail delivered off Titanic at Queenstown. The card itself is a rare example of the famous Montague black image of Titanic/Olympic; it would most likely have been purchased onboard in the Barber's shop.
336. R.M.S. TITANIC: An exceptional letter written over 3 sides on onboard stationery by Adolphe Saafeld, First Class passenger and victim R.M.S. Titanic. The content refers to a number of evocative and key elements of life as a passenger on Titanic.
10.4.1912
Dear Wifey
3pm.
After leaving at noon we had quite a little excitement, as the tremendous suction of our steamer made all the hawsers of the S.S. New York snap as we passed her and she drifted on to our boat, a collision being averted by our stopping & our tugs coming to the rescue of the "New York". You will probably have read of the occurrence in the papers.
Thanks for your wire. Bauer and Burfy and small also sent telegrams.
The weather is calm and fine, the sky overcast. There are only 370 First Class passengers. So far the boat does not move and goes very steadily. It is not nice to travel alone and leave you behind. I think you will have to come next time.
I have quite an appetite for luncheon. Soup, fillet of plaice, a loin chop with cauliflower and fried potatoes, Apple Manhattan and Rocquefort cheese, washed down with a large Spaten beer iced, so you can see I am not faring badly.
10pm.
I had a long promenade and a doze for an hour up to 5 o'clock. The band played in the afternoon for tea, but I savour a cafe in the Verandah cafe with bread and butter and quite thought I should have to pay but anything and everything in the eating line is gratis.
At 6 o'clock we anchor outside Cherbourg and two tugs with passengers came alongside. Owing to our little mishap at Southampton we were all one hour late and had dinner only at 7.30 instead of 7 o'clock as usual.
The name of my friend, the White Star manager in London works wonders and I have a small table for two to myself. I made a very good dinner and had two cigars in the smoke room and shall now go to bed as I am tired. But for a slight vibration, you would not know that you are at sea.
My cabin is very nice, hot and cold water laid on, an electric heating stove which you can turn on and off, a nice couch with an oval table in front and, of course, everything is new.
So far, apart from occasional remarks, I have not spoken to anyone. I want to keep quiet and have a through rest. As I don't know whether I shall be up in time for the mail at Queenstown, I am posting this letter tonight.
A kiss for you and love to all from
Your loving Husband, Adolf.
337. R.M.S. TITANIC - THE THOMAS LEONARD THEOBALD ARCHIVE:

351. R.M.S. TITANIC - ORIGINAL PHOTOGRAPH OF TITANIC IN NEAR COLLISION WITH NEW YORK.
Soon after leaving her dock in Southampton, suction from the White Star Line's newest ship was strong enough to snap the lines of the S.S. New York as Titanic had come alongside her, drawing the smaller ship from her moorings and towards Titanic by the stern. The Titanic was under the direction of the harbour pilot but Captain Smith had ordered an engine surge which managed to push the New York away from Titanic when they were just a few feet apart from a likely collision. Quick thinking tugboat captains aboard the Vulcan and Hercules managed to get lines aboard the New York and pull her further away from Titanic, averting an early disaster. The incident delayed Titanic's departure for about an hour. Original photos of the event seldom surface, the most recognizable of which being those taken by Father Francis M. Browne, a cross-channel Titanic passenger who disembarked at Queenstown. His photos, of course, were taken from onboard ship while the photo offered here was taken from the dock, providing a much broader perspective of the action. Titanic, New York, a tug and a portion of Oceanic can all be clearly seen.
Based on markings and captions contained on the photograph, it would appear that this very image was used in the book The American Procession: American Life Since 1860 in Photographs by Agnes Rogers/Frederick Lewis Allen )Harper Brothers 1933) and in a subsequent publication in 1937. The photograph shows some creases.
